The first sports film to win any Oscar was in 1931 The winner, about a battered boxer hoping for a comeback. It even won two Oscars – Best Actor for Wallace Beery, who played the titular champion, and Best Screenplay (Original Story) for screenwriter Frances Marion. The film was also nominated for Outstanding Production (the equivalent of modern Best Picture) and its director, King Vidor, won Best Director at the 5th Academy Awards.

Interestingly, the first sports film to win this coveted Best Picture statuette was also about an unlucky boxer – in 1976 Rocky.
