How do astronauts use the bathroom in space?
Very carefully. bathroom technology has come a long way over the years (there was a time when astronauts only had self-adhesive plastic bags for bathrooms), but it’s still not exactly convenient. Aboard the International Space Station, the toilets are designed without gravity – they use funnels, narrow openings and vacuum cleaners to ensure waste is retained.
Astronauts even go through special toilet training to ensure they can use the space potty properly, as it’s quite fragile and very expensive – NASA bought it for $19 million in 2008.
